a special edition of "360" live from boston on the anniversary of the boston bombings. thanks very much for watching the irs scandal now a criminal investigation, and the president promising punishment for anyone at the agency who targeted conservatives. newly releaed tonight, 911 calls in the murder of laila fowler, and her stepmother doesn't even mention the little girl was hurt in that call. pandering, sexual conduct, assault -- can sshocking allega rattling the army's ft. hood. >> good morning. i'm zoraida sambolin. >> and i'm john berman.

an army sergeant assigned to a sexual assault prevention program at ft. hood, texas, accused of sexual assault himself. this latest scandal apparently involves prostitution. the unknown soldier is under investigation for pandering, abusive contact, assault, and maltreatment of subordinates. officials told barbara starr the official faces serious consequences. >> reporter: the cid now investigating the allegations against him. so this suggests very strongly a potential criminal case. >> the unnamed sergeant first class remains suspended from all duties this morning. now we're going to move to a startling statement. there is a criminal investigation into the irs. yes, the organization that collects our money and holds us accountable is itself now facing serious, scathing questions about possible overreach and political targeting. president obama blasting the agency for singling out

conservative groups, and he says it's intolerable and inexcusable. he promises to hold those responsible accountable for their actions. today the attorney general will get grilled about these claims. let's get the latest from cnn's brianna keilar. >> reporter: the internal revenue service is facing a criminal investigation after a watchdog report found the agency targeted conservative groups starting in 2010. the agency's inspector general found the irs used inappropriate criteria that identified for review tea party and other organizations applying for tax exempt status, based upon their names or policy positions, instead of indications of potential political campaign intervention. after reading the report tuesday night, president obama called the plan intolerable and inexcusable after promising action monday. >> people have to be held accountable, and it's got to be fixed.

>> reporter: irs investigators said they acted on their own without help from outside groups. managers were inefficient at overseeing lower level employees at following the rules governing tax-exempt organizations. it's not the only controversy the obama administration is facing. expect fireworks when the republican led house judiciary committee grills attorney general eric holder over the justice department's subpoenaed phone records of reporters at the associated press. >> we've put a value on the rule of law and our values as americans. i think the actions we've taken are consistent with both. >> reporter: tuesday they questioned him in a fraud event and questioned jay carney at a white house briefing. >> the president is a strong believer in the first amendment and a strong belief for the press to be unfettered. >> reporter: republicans are seizing on these new

controversies. >> we do know this. we can't count on the administration to be forthcoming about the details of this scandal because so far they've been anything but. >> it lies at the president's feet. these are things going on in his administration targeting opponents. >> i've never seen anything like this, except in the past during the nixon years. >> i can tell you that people who make those kinds of comparisons need to check their history. >> our thanks to brianna for that report. on the irs scandal, the house will hold its first hearing on this subject on friday. that promises to be a doozy. attorneys for cleveland kid napping suspect say he is not the monster everyone claims he is, and they plan to plead not guilty if a grand jury indicts him. castro's lawyers tell affiliate wkyc, that their client has not admitted anything to them, that they may seek a change of venue,

and that he is committed to the daughter he fathered with amanda berry, insisting he loves her dearly. pamela brown is tracking all the latest developments live this morning. what about all the reports that he confessed? >> reporter: that's right, zoraida. what we're hearing from his attorneys contradicts not only what we're hearing from very reliable sources who have firsthand knowledge of the investigation, but also our affiliate sources as well. as we've been reporting, zoraida, we've been saying that castro has confessed to at least some of his actions over the past decade inside the house here behind me in cleveland. we haven't been specific, but we do know from, again, high ranking law enforcement officers with firsthand knowledge of the investigation, that he has admitted to at least some of his actions. now we're hearing from his attorney, speaking to one of our affiliates, saying that he hasn't admitted any wrongdoing, including the kidnappings.

as you said, his attorneys are saying that he's going to plead not guilty. his attorneys saying that they are going to mount the best defense possible in this case and that they want to potentially move the trial out of cuyahoga county for a couple of different reasons. one, they think that will give him a fair trial. they believe, obviously, this case has been given so much media attention, that it will help to move it elsewhere. and it's also on the heels of another high profile case in cleveland where a man was convicted of murdering 11 women. they're concerned it would hurt the integrity of the trial if it does happen here in cuyahoga county. zoraida? >> i've got to tell you, there are probably not many people who have not followed this story very closely across the country. pamela brown live in cleveland. thank you. laila fowler's 12-year-old brother will be in court today for the stabbing death of his sister. the 8-year-old girl was found dead in her california home last

month. police now just releasing the 911 call that summoned officers to the scene. the children's stepmother crystal walters made the call. she never mentioned leila had been attacked. >> my children are at home alone, and a man just ran out of the house. my older son was in the bathroom, and my daughter started screaming. he came out, and there was a man inside my house. >> the man is gone, though? >> they say he ran out. >> how old are your kids? >> 12 and 9. >> the fowler family has hired a defense team to represent their son. they visiteded the boy tuesday at a juvenile detention center. >> he's actually doing really well right now, as well as can be expected. these are really difficult times. >> leila fowler's brother will be tried as a juvenile on second degree murder charges. it's a big day in court for o.j. simpson. he'll testify today in an attempt to get out of prison. the disgraced football star is trying to get his robbery,

assault, and kidnapping convictions thrown out. simpson did not testify during his 1995 trial or the 2008 case that landed him in prison. his attorneys tell us what we can expect. >> we're just telling him to take the stand and tell the truth. we'll walk him through each of the claims, and then he'll take on cross, and i'm sure he'll do fine. >> it's big. he's going to have to go through -- miss palm will go through every single issue with him on the stand. he'll be up there all day, i'm sure. >> simpson claims his old lawyer was ineffective and said he was within his rights to take back property he believed was stolen for him, as long as it was done without trespass or physical force. jodi arias will be in court today for the sentencing phase of her trial. before jurors can impose the death penalty, they must answer a key question. was arias cruel when she murdered travis hafner?

is jodi arias is now tweeting. she has warned, "any donations to my family or me are made only at jodiariasisinnocent.com. any other source asking for donations is fraudulent. thank you." boston fire chief steve abraira is under fire for his handling of the boston bombings. 13 of 14 fire chiefs have signed a letter of no confidence. they claim he was more of a spectator than a commander at the height of the terror attack. the embattled chief told "the boston globe," he felt the situation was under control, and he felt there was no need to add another layer of management to an already complicated scene. the woman who survived 13 days buried under rubble in the bangladesh building collapse is speaking. she is now in a military

is inspiring so many others to discuss their health and their fears, demistifying what happens when a woman decides to go through this surgery. for us here, it's something that hits very close to home. angelina jolie is receiving a lot of praise, a the lot of support, following her revelation about having a preventative double mastectomy. her partner of eight years brad pitt is among the stars commending jolie for going public with her difficult choice. "she could have stayed absolutely private about it and i don't think anyone would have been none the wiser with such good results. but it was really important to her to share her story and let others understand it doesn't have to be a scary thing. in fact, it can be an empowering thing and something that makes you stronger and us stronger." breast cancer survivor and singer, sheryl crowe, tweeted her support. "i commend angelina jolie for her courage and thoughtfulness in sharing the story today regarding her mastectomy. so brave."

angelina's admission in an op-ed dominated talk shows, prompting barbara walters to make her own news on the view. >> my sister passed away from ovarian cancer, and i had my ovaries removed. it's a decision you have to make. it's preventative. >> on "the talk," sharon osborne, who underwent a double mastectomy last year, offered these words. >> she's so brave, and she's going to help so many women. i think it makes her sexier than ever. >> jolie is also receiving words of encouragement from tv host and reality star giuliana rancic, who's been incredibly public with her own battle with breast cancer and her decision to have her breasts removed. >> i didn't want to be looking over my shoulder the rest of my life. i knew i wanted a child. and really what it came down to was just wanting to live, wanting to enjoy this incredible life and this incredible world. i just didn't want to leave. i didn't want to go anywhere. i wanted to be healthy and do whatever it took to get me

new york has just reopened the investigation into his presumed death. the white house facing a lot of criticism for its response to the deadly terror attack on the u.s. consulate of benghazi. republican congressman jason chavitz says the president's handling of the incident could amount to an impeachable offense. >> look, it's not something i'm speakin seeking. it's not the end game. i was simplied ask, is that within the realm of possibilities? and i said, yes. i'm not taking that off the table. we want the people who perpetrated the terrorism in benghazi be brought to justice, and we want the president do what he's always said he would do, and that is be open and transparent, and he's not done that. >> chaffetz says the version of events he's heard on the ground in benghazi is totally different than what has been portrayed. the roller coaster that came

good morning. we're minding your business. this morning there is news that france, europe's second biggest economy, is in recession. [ speaking french ] >> very good. >> here at home, record highs, the dow, nasdaq, and s&p close at all time highs. stock futures are flat this morning. the fallout after last month's clothing factory collapse in bangladesh, retailers all over the world are signing a pact for worker safety. there are two notable exceptions. i'm shocked. >> there's some division from american retailers about whether to sign on and what exactly they're signing on to. as i told you yesterday, a five-year plan to improve safety is fine if it really does improve safety.

walmart isn't signing. neither is the gap. this is the global safety pact i told you about yesterday. retailers that sign are legally bound to have independent safety inspections of factories in bangladesh and make the findings public. they al i should say that big retailerses should have already done this, but i digress. benetton, marks and spencer signed on. walmart says it's going to do its own thing. it has 279 factories in bangladesh that work for it. it will make the results public by june 1st. if a factory working for walmart fails, walmart will make that public. they say it meets or exceeds the european plan and will get the results more quickly. walmart is already doing inspections. the european pact gives 45 days for critics to be able to do so.

critics say there's one area where walmart falls short. it's hiring its own inspectors. gap isn't signing this pact. it says it's ready do but it wants to make changes. gap doesn't want the pact to be legally binding. republican george miller has been very outspoken about this. >> these companies resisting, gap and others, do they want to have blood on their label? should the low price of their goods be subsidized by the blood of these poor workers in bangladesh and around the world? >> the eu commission has called this modern slavery, and for companies to be talking about just now how they're going to get results for these factory workers, it's a little rich considering the money they've squeezed out of the country. the deadline is today. zoraida, you're saying, wait a

no confidence. the chief of boston's fire department under fire for how he handled the marathon bombings. five years. that's how long murdered model juliana redding's family has waited for justice. today her alleged murder for hire trial begins. and decked out in tuxes and gowns, 20 kids heading for prom have a date with destiny, jumping from a limo and rescuing seven people from an overturned van. they have a great story to tell. >> welcome back to "early start," everyone, i'm john berman. new this morning, boston's

fire chief steven abraira is firing back at underlings who are questioning his leadership during the boston marathon many bombing. 13 of 14 deputy fire chiefs signed a letter of no confidence, claiming the chief was more a spectator than a commander during the height of the terror attack. but the chief tells "the boston globe" he felt the situation was already under control and no need to add another layer of management to what was already a complicated scene. today marks 30 days since the boston marathon bombings. today the trial begins as to who killed actress and model juliana redding back in 2008. prosecutors say her death was a hit carried out by a, quote, female james bond. stephanie elam with more on the alleged murder for hire case. >> reporter: more than five years after actress and model juliana redding was found strangled and beaten to death in her santa monica apartment, her accused killer will finally stand before a jury.

>> this is the first case i've ever heard of where a woman is accused of essentially being a hired goon to go beat someone up. >> reporter: redding was just 21 years old when she left tucson, arizona, to pursue dreams of stardom. she had some success, appearing in an independent film, a music video, and a photo spread in maxim magazine. her dreams were cut short by this woman, 47-year-old kelly sue park. they say park was hired by this man after her father pulled out a deal five days before redding was killed. the doctor made payments to park totaling more than $250,000 just weeks before redding was killed. however, the doctor, who left the country shortly after park's arrest, has never been charged in this case. park remains free on a $3.5 million bond. her lawyers say she's innocent and that the prosecution should be looking at john gilmore, a former boyfriend of redding's.

but prosecutors believe they have a strong case against park, especially since her dna was found not only in the victim's apartment but also on her body. >> if the jury believes the ex-boyfriend was responsible for this killing, there still remains a question, how do we explain ms. park's dna being at the crime scene? >> reporter: the trial is expected to last about three months. unlike other murder cases we've seen recently, like jodi arias or casey anthony, only portions of this trial will be televiset. stephanie elam, los angeles. leila fowler's 12-year-old brother will be in court today for the stabbing death of his sister. the 8-year-old girl was found dead in their california home late last month. releasing the 911 recording from the scene. when the stepmother made the call, she never mentioned leila had been attacked. >> my children are home alone, and a man just ran out of my

house. my daughter was in the bathroom, and my son started screaming. >> the man was gone though? is >> i just got here right now. >> how old are your kids? >> 12 and 9. >> the fowler family has hired a defense team to represent their son. he will be tried as a juvenile on second degree murder charges. russia is calling the arrest of a u.s. diplomat in moscow a cold war provocation. the russian security agency fsb says u.s. embassy employee ryan christopher fogel tried to recruit a russian intelligence officer. he was caught red handed with a wig, recording devices, and what appeared to be a stack of euros. so far no comment from the u.s. embassy. the state department will only say an officer at the u.s. embassy in moscow was briefly detained and then released. i revealed a very personal struggle yesterday in part because of angelina jolie's courageous actions. i disclosed yesterday that i have breast cancer.

it's been five weeks since i was diagnosed, and i've decided to have a double mastectomy. jolie's candor has inspired me and other women to start a dialogue, talk to your doctor, talk to each other. it could save a life. so we brought together four women who became empowered patients, and we're hoping they'll now be a source of inspiration for you, for all of those who may be struggling with a cancer diagnosis as well. all right. so angelina jolie comes out with this amazing op-ed piece that she has had a preventative double mastectomy. i want you all to chime in on how you took that news when you found out. >> well, i found out pretty early as i was getting the kids ready for school, and i kind of heard it on the tv, and i said, well, we don't share the gene for legs. we don't share the genes for getting skinny right after you have many pregnancies, but we do share one gene, and it's this one.

>> making a decision to have the double mastectomy, it was a no brainer. it was the easiest decision. for me, what type of reconstruction i was going to have was a much harder decision. >> i feel shallow because it was a hard decision for me. >> i think you were at a different time a little bit, you know. >> a little bit. i was 27, and the word mastectomy wasn't in the culture. >> by nature, as journalists, we tend to be control freaks. we like to control everything, know when it's going to happen, how it's going to happen, plan it and all that. that's been a big struggle for me, losing control. the only thing i can control is i decided to have a double mastectomy, and that to me was complicated. how did you all feel about that, about that lack of control? >> well, i felt that i did have control, and like angelina jolie, i could take care of this now instead of sitting around waiting for cancer, which is how i felt. i felt like a ticking time bomb. i didn't want to sit round

waiting for cancer. now i'm a previvor. i don't have to sit around waiting for cancer. >> my mother didn't have that choice. it was such a crazy cancer, and it was going to kill her. we never knew she was going to die. she was so strong, she never got sick in front of us. when she did pass away, we were like what? my kids are never going to have to deal with that. >> this test is really expensive. it's $3,000. >> is it was even more when we took it. our insurance covered it. >> why? because you had a history, a strong history of it. >> right. we were in a special surveillance program at sloan kettering. >> i found out through 23 and me, which is an at home genetic test, and i wasn't testing for the braca gene. even though my sister had breast cancer, she was negative. by the time the results came

back, i had already forgotten about it. i was shocked that my sister had breast cancer, but i had the gene. >> to me the decision was not simple. it was in the sense that my first -- when i got diagnosed by my first team of doctors, they were talking mastectomy. i walked out of there like cut them out. can we do it tomorrow? is then i got my second opinion, and i started thinking a little bit differently. i thought about my kids, and i thought about the fear of not being there in the future. that's powerful. >> that touched me with angelina jolie. she has kids. >> from that standpoint, it's a no brainer. >> that's what makes me so sad. women have to think we're vain? i feel so vain. i lost my hair. i'm like you're not vain. that is a horrible thing to lose your hair. >> i was embarrassed by how difficult that decision was. >> don't be. it's a terrible decision to have to make. >> it makes you start thinking about your sexuality, which i've thought more about than i ever

welcome back, everyone. some florida high schools are being praised for their heroic efforts on prom night. >> they didn't think twice about helping the victims of a nasty auto accidents. christine romans has the story. >> all dressed up in tuxes and gowns. they saw a van flipped over, saw people trapped inside. that's when the kids took action. >> where's the baby? where's the baby? >> reporter: a date with disaster, 20 high school students on their way to prom find themselves caught in the middle of a horrific accident. >> that's the baby? >> she's okay. >> reporter: when their limousine came to a screeching halt, narrowly missing this flipped van with groceries strewn across the interstate with five adults and two

sergeant first class there at fort hood, texas. part of his job, apprecia preve sexual assault. the soldier not named or charged specifically. what military officials are investigatin investigating, pandering, abusive sexual contact and maltreatment of subordinates according to the army. administration officials tell cnn there is a distinct possibility this involved some sort of prostitution-related activity, but we want to be clear. investigators have not yet determined if that's the case, or even the scope of the potential criminal contact. john? >> so i have to admit, i woke up this morning and was confused. oh. a case of someone assigned to prevent sexual assault charged with sexual assault. i thought we just heard that. turns out we did just hear that. the second time in a short period of time we heard such a thing. what's going on and what is the d.o.d. doing to stop this? >> it's all too familiar, these

allegations. you remember. you're talking about the case of that air force officer arrested for allegedly grabbing a woman's buttocks and breasts in a parking lot in northern virginia. that actually, that incident, wasn't too far from the pentagon, and as you mentioned he also worked to prevent sexual assault in the military. he was in a court appearance last week and didn't enter a plea. as you question about what the military is doing, they're very concerned about these allegations, john. defense secretary chuck hagel directed all military branchs to retrain, recredential and rescreen all sexual assault prevention and response personnel and military recruiters according to a pentagon spokesman. take thatting these allegations very seriously and obviously want all's their members to know they'll be watching closely. >> seems to be a serious issue, shannon. one that does not go away. thanks very much, in washington. and attorneys for cleveland

kidnapping suspect ariel castro say their client is not the monster everyone claim hess is and now reporting how they'll plea. what are castros lawyers say, planning to do, pam? >> reporter: kel, zoraida, our affiliate here interviewed castro's attorneys, and his attorneys say that essentially they talked with castro in jail for three hours and they say he will plead not guilty if he faces kidnapping and rape charges with a grand jury indictment. his attorneys say they will meld the best defense possible. what we've been reporting along with several of our affiliates, that castro has confessed to at least some of his actions over the past ten years to authorities during interrogations. one of his attorneys says that castro has not confessed anything to him. so, again, his attorneys are saying that castro will plead not guilty, and that they are

bangladesh and make the findings public and companies must stop working with factories that don't make safety upgrades. american retailers are balking. walmartological do i ologicawil. hire its own inspector to scrutinize the factories it uses in bangladesh making those public by june 1st. walmart says it's better than the european plan, meets and exceeds the plan and will get more results quickly. this falls short, the retailer lost control of the supply chain is footing the inspector's bill. 129 workers died last fall in a factory making clothes for walmart shoppers in a fire walmart didn't eve known bawas making its products. gap doesn't want the pact to be legally binding. others are reluctant to protect themselves from international courts. a california congressman has been very outspoken on this

building in bangladesh. she speaks exclusively to cnn. >> amazing. >> it is. welcome back to "early start," everyone. i'm john berman. >> and i'm zoraida sambolin at 20 past the hour. the trial of an accused killer being call add female james bond begins today. california prosecutors say model and actress juliana redding was a victim of a murder for hire scheme in 2008. stephanie elam has a look at the case. >> reporter: more than five years after aspiring actress and model juliana redding was found strangled and beaten to death in her santa monica apartment, her accused killer will finally stand before a jury. >> the first case i've heard of where a woman is accused of especially being a hired glean to go beat somebody up. >> reporter: redding was 20 years old pursuing her dreams of stardom. some success appearing in an independent film, and photo spread in "maxim" magazine. her dreamed cut short,

prosecutors say, by this woman. 47-year-old kelly soo park. asserting park was hired by a physician to kill redding after her father, a pharmacist, pulled out of a business deal with him just five days before she was killed. court documents also allege that the doctor made payments to park totals more than $250,000 just weeks before redding was killed. however, the doctor who left the country shortly after park's arrest has never been charged in this case. park remains free on a $3.5 million bond. her lawyers say she's innocent, and that the prosecution should be looking at john gilmore, a former boyfriend of redding's. but prosecutors believe they have a strong case against park, especially since her dna was found not only in the victim's apartment but also on her body. >> if the jury believes that the ex-boyfriend was responsible for this killing, there still remain as question, how do we explain ms. park's dna being at the crime scene.

maybe even your friend's life. we brought together four women who became empowered patients -- an understatement -- and hoping they will be a source of inspiration to you. for those struggling with a cancer diagnosis. >> all right. so angelina jolie comes out with this amazing op-ed piece that she has had a preventative double mastectomy. i just want you all to chime in on how you took that news when you found out. >> well, i found out pretty early as i was getting the kids ready for school and i kind of heard it on the tv, and i said, well, we don't share the gene for legs. we don't share the genes for getting skinny right after you have many pregnancies, but we do share one gene and it's this one. >> making the decision to have the double mast secretarymy was a no brainer. the easiest decision. for me, what type of reconstruction i was going have,

was a much harder decision. >> yeah. i felt shallow, because it was a hard decision for me. >> i think you were in a different time, a little bit. >> a little bit. i was 27, and the word mastectomy wasn't in the culture. >> by nature as journalists we tend to it be control freaks. we like to control everything and know when it's going to happen, how it's going to happen, plan it, all that. that's been a big struggle for me. losing control. the only thing that i can control is, i decided to have a double mastectomy and so that, to me, was complicated. how did you all feel about that, about that lack of control? >> well, i felt that i did have control, and like angelina jolie i could take care of this now, instead of sitting around waiting for cancer, which is how i felt. i felt like a ticking time bomb and i didn't want to sit around and wait for cancer. now i'm a pre-vivor and don't have to sit around and be a

survivor. my mother didn't have that choice. a crazy, strong cancer that was going to kill her and we never knew she was going to die, because she was so strong. she never got sick in front of us. when she did pass away, we were like, what do you mean our mother's not here? so that wasn't happening to my kids. my kids were always going have a mother here. always. >> i want to deal with this brca gene. this test is really expensive. it's $3,000. >> it subpoena we weis. we were talking about it. i thought it was more. >> our insurance covered it? >> because of a strong history of it? >> yes. in a special surveillance program at sloan-kettering. >> i found out with a genetic test and wasn't testing for the brca gene, even though my sister had breast cancer she was negative. by the time the results came back i had already forgotten about it and i was just shocked that my sister had breast cancer and i had the gene. >> so to me the decision was not simple. i mean, it was in the sense that

my first -- when i got diagnoseed by my first team of doctors, talking mastectomy. i walked out of there, cut them out. can we do it tomorrow. then a second opinion and started thinking differently. i thought about my kids right away and the fear of not being there in the future. that's powerful. right? >> touched me. wi angelina jolie. the kids. >> from that standpoint it is a no-brainer. >> this is what's so sad. women have to think we're vain. so many women say, i feel so vain. i lost my hair. i'm like, you're not vain. that is a horrible thing to lose your hair. >> that, to me was -- i was embarrassed by -- >> don't be. it's a terrible decision to have to make. >> so it makes you start thinking about your sexuality, when i thought more about than i ever have before in my life. >> yes. >> and how this will affect that. >> you'll get through all of the dreams and yuckiness and

surgery, and then that will be part of your past, and you won't think about that again. i moved on and you don't look back. >> but you're different now. >> with clothes on, with a bathing suit on, nobody knows. >> what helped me was, i still buy really pretty bras. i can buy bras i couldn't before. go to victoria's secret and i feel really pretty in them. >> you're not less feminine before than after. >> a lot of it is up here. >> it is normal to be overwhelmed by the mortality of it, and what you did makes me think that you know how to take care of yourself, and you've already probably saved a life, as a result of your experience. >> a great, powerful support of women. i love them. one of the big concerns we talked about is the cost of this particular struggle. senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen is joining us. of those four women, three tested positive for the brca gene. two had the blood test.

one of them had a spit test she said costs $99, that other test is sometimes $3,000, sometimes $4,000. a., i want to know, what can you do if your insurance company doesn't cover that expensive test and then i want to talk about this other test they mentioned. >> okay. so if your insurance company doesn't cover this test, genetic test, or say you're uninsured, what you can do, go to myriad, the company that makes the breast cancer genetic test, and you can ask them for financial help. here's the deal. myriad is the only company that makes this breast cancer gene test, and so they have a monopoly. so they have vowed to help women who can't afford to do it themselves. so keep them honest, to borrow a phrase from a friend, and make them live up to their commitment. say, look. this is a test which can cost up to $4,000. i need your help. help me pay for this. go ahead, john. >> go ahead, elizabeth. >> i was going to say, the women in the piece were saying, when

you mentioned $3,000, oh, i thought it was more. they're right. it can cost as much as $4,000 to get what doctors, what many doctors consider is the best test for most women. >> one of the women zoraida talked to, mentioned a spit test for $99. i hadn't heard about that before. is that effective? reliable? >> i've talked to doctors about this. they're like, look, there is really only one test that we can use when we're treating people, and that is the blood test that myriad makes. i've heard about this spit test. make you take it and it leads you to do the blood test, but if you want the real thing, if you really want to know if you carry the gene, you need the blood test. doctors cannot start making decisions and treating you based on the spit test. very complicated. you need to know which mutation you have. the only way to do that, by doing the blood test. the only way to really find out. i wish i could say, yes. i'm all for saving money. let me tell you.
